Grassland degradation induces high dietary niche overlap between two common livestock: cattle and sheep

چکیده
Abstract Introduction Diet selection of grazing livestock is one the critical factors affecting diversity and composition plant communities in grasslands, with consequent impacts for ecosystem functioning. Co‐grazing multiple species could create additive or complementary effects on due to diet overlap differentiation among species. However, there only limited knowledge about co‐occurring whether how these characteristics change grassland degradation. Materials Methods We experimentally test diets two commonly (cattle sheep) dietary niche partitioning/overlap between them non‐degraded, moderately severely degraded grasslands. Results Cattle exhibited broader than sheep, was lower non‐degraded As degradation increased availability annual plants, interspecific cattle sheep gradually increased, suffered a resulting compression. Sheep maintained relatively narrow constant breadth. Conclusion The increasing extent indicated co‐grazing community, thus stronger community diversity.

High niche overlap between two successfully coexisting pairs of Lake Malawi cichlid fishes
Many species in high-diversity assemblages appear to coexist in similar ecological niches. It has been proposed that interspecific resource partitioning in these assemblages may only occur during periods of resource scarcity. We tested this hypothesis by measuring resource abundance, dietary overlap, foraging rate, and territoriality in a Lake Malawi rock cichlid assemblage over a period of 1 y...
متن کاملEnvironmental Niche Overlap between Common and Dusky Dolphins in North Patagonia, Argentina
Research on the ecology of sympatric dolphins has increased worldwide in recent decades. However, many dolphin associations such as that between common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) are poorly understood. The present study was conducted in the San Matías Gulf (SMG) ecosystem (North Patagonia, Argentina) where a high diet overlap among both species was...

متن کاملNiche overlap and diffuse competition.
Current theory predicts a distinct upper limit on the permissible degree of niche overlap; moreover, theory suggests that maximal tolerable overlap should be relatively insensitive to environmental variability. Data presented here demonstrate that, within the lizard subset of natural desert communities, niche overlap decreases both with increasing environmental variability and with increasing n...
متن کاملDietary Differences between Goats and Sheep
Goats in pens eat about 20% more of a low quality feed than do sheep. This higher intake is just sufficient to match the higher maintenance energy requwment of the goats, so, in reality, they are not more suited to an existence on low quality feeds There is little difference between goats and sheep in the extent to which they digest and utilise feeds. It is clear that goats will eat more browse...
